◾️ Morning Reflections | On Listening to Music

In most moments, when I listen to music, the words scarcely reach me. My ear is drawn instead – almost instinctively – to the flow of tones and melodies, to the composer’s hidden intention, and to the living current of energy released by a performer or vocalist who has surrendered entirely to the moment of sound. Those waves of vibration seem to thicken the once-light and transparent air, filling it with a sense of vastness, until the whole space around me transforms into something dense with emotion – a new world, born entirely of sound. To be immersed in that world of sensation and resonance, to simply inhabit the ambience it creates, is already overwhelming enough. I have never been able to follow, comprehend, or memorize a song’s lyrics. So to watch countless people flawlessly sing every word of “Golden” – this year’s global sensation from the film K-Pop Demon Hunters – is quite like witnessing the rare beauty of collective emotion made visible through sound. For all the music in this world is, after all, like air itself – a living resonance of nature, flowing through and filling the space of our mortal existence.

대부분의 경우, 음악을 들을때 가사들이 들리기 보다, 음과 멜로디의 흐름, 작곡가의 의도, 그리고 공연의 순간에 온전히 몰입한 연주자나 보컬리스트가 내뿜는 에너지에 온전히 집중된다. 그들이 만들어내는 다양한 음파의 진동이, 주변의 가볍고 투명하던 공기를 한 순간에 짙은 공간감과 감정의 파동으로 가득채워 완전히 새로운 세상으로 주변이 변하기 때문이다. 그렇게 그 새로운 세상을 감각과 파동으로 온전히 ambience를 경험하는 것은 상당한 몰입을 요하는 일이기에, 노래의 가사까지 따라 듣고 이해하며 외우는 일은 해본 적이 없다. 그래서인지, 올여름 전 세계를 뒤흔든 K-Pop Demon Hunters의 타이틀곡 “Golden”을 완벽히 따라 부르는 이들처럼 한 음절도 틀리지 않게 가사를 빠짐없이 기억해 부르는 이들을 보면 경이로운 마음이 든다. 마치 집단의 감정이 소리를 통해 invisble 에서 visible로 눈앞에 보여지게 되는 순간 같기 때문이랄까. 아마도 세상의 모든 음악은 공기와도 같은 것일지도 모른다. 살아있는 대자연의 울림이 되어, 우리의 유한한 삶의 공간을 가득 채우며 시간과 함께 흐르는.
